Philosophy & Curriculum

Montessori is a teaching philosophy based on the natural learning processes of children.  Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, developed the method almost a century ago.  She used the term "the absorbent mind" to describe how a young child learns in a comfortable and stimulating environment--one in which the child becomes absorbed in work and develops concentration, independence and self discipline.

The Montessori approach uses specialized materials to teach practical life skills (necessary for fine motor skills development, concentration and independence); sensory-motor education and cognitive skills development; language arts; and mathematics.

At Pukka Beginnings, we provide an all-day Montessori program, five days per week, from 8 am to 6 pm.  Each day, our children participate in:
  • Morning Sharing Circle
  • Practical Life Activities
  • Reading and Writing Education
  • Independent Work
  • Animal Care
  • Outdoor Time

Children clean up in preparation for lunch, and participate in special, supervised tumbling activities outside.
